Acupuncture

Not all pain can be controlled by medications.  Acupuncture can help reduce discomfort and ataxia (lack of control when walking). It is useful in treating osteoarthritis and other forms of musculo skeletal pain.

At the Ark Veterinary Centre, we can offer acupuncture for the treatment of joint, muscle and nerve pain

The needles used are small fine disposable needles. There is no pain associated with their placement and they are left in place for 10-15 minutes. Often we notice pets visibly relaxing with the needles in place, and sometimes even dropping off to sleep.

Usual treatment involves a session once weekly for 4 weeks, then monthly or as needed when a flare up occurs depending on the underlying problem.

The needles stimulate the nerves and blood vessels encouraging increased blood flow and nerve growth. They also have an effect on pain modulation and stimulate the release of endorphins which reduce pain sensation and induce a feeling of wellbeing.
